Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2: Release Date, Gorgeous Vibrant Visuals and a Free Upgrade

Minecraft on Switch 2 is almost here: on October 27, 2026, Minecraft launches on Nintendo Switch 2 as a native version. I sank countless hours into Minecraft on the original Switch, and I'm genuinely looking forward to finally seeing my old worlds with better visuals.

Mojang Studios isn't just bringing Minecraft to Switch 2 via backward compatibility, but as a dedicated version that, according to Mojang, is optimized for the more powerful hardware. Here's a rundown of what the Minecraft Switch 2 version offers, what changes compared to the old Switch version and how you can upgrade.

Minecraft Switch 2: Release on October 27, 2026

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026. Pre-orders for Minecraft Switch 2 are already live on the Nintendo eShop. Mojang officially confirmed the date in early August, after the game was announced for the new console in June. According to Mojang, a physical retail version will be available alongside the digital one.

Three editions are on offer: the Standard Edition, the Deluxe Collection with three add-ons, three Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins, and the Ultimate Collection with five add-ons, five Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins. The Minecoins can only be redeemed on Nintendo platforms.

Which edition is right for whom? If you mainly play Minecraft with friends or kids and like trying out worlds and skins from the Marketplace anyway, the bigger collections give you a solid starter pack. If you just want to build and survive, the Standard Edition will serve you well, since the actual game is identical across all three editions.

Technical improvements with Vibrant Visuals

The biggest upgrade is the graphics. On Switch 2, Vibrant Visuals is enabled by default. The graphics mode adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, shadows and reflections, and according to Mojang it also works with Marketplace content.

There are some limitations, though: Vibrant Visuals isn't available in split-screen or with some Marketplace content. The popular Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, which remains exclusive to Nintendo platforms, has also been reworked for Vibrant Visuals.

In Minecraft especially, lighting makes a huge difference. Caves feel more menacing with real shadows, sunsets bathe entire landscapes in warm orange, and underwater the light refracts at the surface. In the official trailer, Minecraft Switch 2 looks almost like a new game, even though the familiar blocky look naturally stays.

Resolution and FPS

Neither Mojang nor Nintendo has officially shared concrete details on resolution, frame rate or render distance yet. Officially, they only say the version has been optimized for the more powerful Switch 2 hardware. As soon as there are reliable numbers, I'll add them here.

I'm deliberately cautious here: I'm only listing what Mojang and Nintendo have confirmed themselves. I'll take a close look at how Minecraft Switch 2 actually performs in handheld mode and on the TV after release.

Differences from the old Switch version

On the original Switch, Minecraft runs without Vibrant Visuals and has to make do with far less power. The new version, by contrast, is built natively for Switch 2 and uses the more modern graphics by default. According to the official trailer, you can bring your existing worlds over from Switch.

For me, that's the most important point. Nobody wants to leave behind a city they've spent years building just because a new console is sitting on the shelf. The fact that Mojang explicitly shows worlds being transferred takes away the biggest worry many Switch players have about making the jump.

How the upgrade works

If you own the digital version of Minecraft for the original Switch, you'll get the Standard Edition for Switch 2 free on the Nintendo eShop until the end of January 2027. Exceptions apply in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, where a small fee is charged. You can upgrade to the Deluxe or Ultimate Collection at a discount.

My take

For me, this is exactly the update Switch players have been waiting for. Minecraft on the old Switch always worked, but it looked washed out compared to other platforms. I think it's fair that the upgrade is free for owners of the digital version. The only shame is that Vibrant Visuals is missing in split-screen, because on Switch in particular I often play with friends on one screen.
