How alive will Vice City really be? Rockstar has shared new insights into the GTA 6 NPCs: Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, explains in a big interview with IGN (published in full on October 7, 2026) that pedestrians react much more realistically to drawn weapons and to your behavior. The foundation comes from Red Dead Redemption 2.

The GTA 6 NPCs build on Red Dead Redemption 2
According to Nelson, the NPC interaction system in Grand Theft Auto VI is an evolved version of the system from Red Dead Redemption 2. In GTA 5 and the first Red Dead Redemption there were only very simple ways to talk to pedestrians. In the past, the left trigger (L2) simply aimed your gun at someone. Since Red Dead Redemption 2, you can instead lock on to someone with your weapon holstered and greet or antagonize them. You only draw your weapon with R2.
With GTA 6, Nelson says Rockstar is taking it “much further”. For the huge amount of pedestrian dialogue, the studio even built an entirely new team of writers, directors and producers in Los Angeles.

How the GTA 6 NPCs react to weapons and your behavior
NPCs now notice when you get too close. If you stand next to a group for too long to eavesdrop, they turn around and ask what you want. If you follow someone for too long, they may become aggressive or simply try to get away. In the demo IGN saw at Rockstar North in July 2026, a group even pulled a gun after an argument. Nelson aimed back with Lucia, the people fled, and shortly afterwards someone reported the incident to the police.
That is exactly Rockstar’s goal: “The world will act upon you as well as you acting upon the world,” says Nelson. In previous GTA games you were almost all-powerful, and everyone except the police would run away in terror. In GTA 6, pedestrians can fight back or escalate a situation. Walking around with a drawn weapon gets noticed, and witnesses can call the police.
The police know your outfit and your car
This ties into the new wanted system. According to Nelson, a crime is only reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off. The police then know what clothes you are wearing, which car you are driving and whether you are travelling as a couple. New clothes, a different car or splitting up Jason and Lucia lowers the attention again. On top of that, a “Criminal Profile” tracks what kind of criminal you are.
What we know about the GTA 6 NPCs so far
- The interaction system comes from Red Dead Redemption 2 and, according to Rockstar North, has been expanded significantly.
- Pedestrians notice eavesdropping and being followed and react annoyed, aggressive or by backing off.
- Drawn weapons get noticed, and other characters can be armed themselves and escalate.
- More heights and body shapes for NPCs: according to Nelson, animations are retargeted on the fly to each character.
- All info comes from a preview demo, the finished game may still differ.
My verdict on the GTA 6 NPCs
To me, this sounds like the biggest step for the game world since GTA 5. Important: the statements come directly from Rockstar North and are based on a preview demo from July. How well the system works in the finished game, we will only find out at release on November 19, 2026.
