OD is Hideo Kojima's horror game, made together with Xbox Game Studios and director Jordan Peele. The title is short for "Overdose": the game is meant to test your fear threshold and hit you with an overdose of terror. OD was announced back in December 2023, and there's still no release date.

Here's everything that's officially confirmed about the concept, cast, teasers, platforms and release. Anything that's still unknown or just speculation is flagged as such.

What you need to know about OD

OD is being developed by Kojima Productions, the studio behind Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was officially revealed at The Game Awards on December 7, 2023, billed in Kojima Productions' press release as "A Hideo Kojima Game". At the time, Kojima called it "a new form of media" built with Xbox's cloud technology.

The concept: an overdose of fear

According to Kojima Productions, OD explores what it's like to push your own fear threshold. How that actually plays out is still a mystery. Here's the little we do know:

  • Kojima has said OD is a single-player game.
  • It's built in Unreal Engine 5, and the new poster also carries MetaHuman and 3Lateral logos.
  • Kojima describes a completely new game system, saying even the infrastructure is new.
  • Players who find it too scary will get a dedicated system that lets them keep playing anyway.

An anthology format seems likely: Kojima's own segment is called "Knock" and is about the fear of knocking, while Jordan Peele is set to tackle a different kind of fear. That structure hasn't been officially confirmed, though. A "fear meter" that tracks your reactions is also just a rumor for now.

Cast: Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier

Just like Death Stranding, OD uses real actors captured in photorealistic detail. Sophia Lillis (It), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) and Udo Kier are confirmed. The German cult actor passed away in November 2025, but according to Kojima he had already completed his scans. Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope) is on board as one of several storytellers; no other members of Kojima's "horror Avengers" have been officially named.

Official teasers

The best look at OD so far came in September 2025 during the "Beyond The Strand" livestream. The "OD – Knock" teaser is shot in first person: Sophia Lillis receives a red card through a crack in the door, steps into a near-empty room and lights candles on an altar. With every candle, the knocking gets louder. Plenty of fans got instant P.T. flashbacks.

Development status

The SAG-AFTRA video game strike stalled performance capture for a long time. At Xbox's Tokyo Game Show broadcast on September 17, 2026, Kojima gave the all-clear: recording is back underway and production is on schedule. A new poster followed on October 30, 2026, with the tagline "For all players and screamers". Until December 20, 2026, a recreation of the teaser's red door is on display at the "Beyond The Strand" exhibition in Tokyo.

Release, platforms and price

There's no release date for OD, not even a rough window. No platforms are officially confirmed either: Xbox has a store page listing Xbox Game Studios as publisher, but it doesn't name any systems. Xbox Series X|S and PC are the obvious bets, but nothing's official. Whether the cloud ends up playing a role is also still open. There's no price yet. We'll update this page as soon as there's news.
