1. Playable Archive
Playable Archive is this Halloween’s big surprise: Brian Clarke of DarkStone Digital, the creator of The Mortuary Assistant, shadow-dropped the game for free on Steam on October 26, 2026, together with publisher DreadXP. It’s based on his cancelled horror project, which he wanted to make playable after all.

Why it’s scary: You review an archive leaked by an anonymous whistleblower. Inside: footage of a New England couple who stumble upon a mysterious object while renovating their home. You perform demonic rituals, communicate with the dead and experience multiple timelines. The game only lasts 30 to 60 minutes, but there’s no save system, so you have to get through it in one sitting. With 97 percent positive Steam reviews, it’s the strongest newcomer of the year.

2. Cry of Fear
Cry of Fear by Swedish developer Team Psykskallar started out as a Half-Life mod and was released on Steam in April 2013 as a free standalone game. You play a young man wandering through the deserted town of Fäversholm on a cold Scandinavian night as he slowly descends into madness.

Why it’s scary: Cry of Fear is old-school psychological survival horror. Narrow alleys, barely any light, scarce ammo and creatures straight out of nightmares. According to the developers, the single-player campaign lasts more than eight hours, and there’s a co-op mode on top. The graphics have aged, but the atmosphere hasn’t. The makers themselves warn: not for the faint of heart.

3. Fears to Fathom – Home Alone
Fears to Fathom by Rayll is an episodic horror series whose first episode, Home Alone, has been free on Steam since July 2021. Each episode tells a short story narrated by those who survived it. Here you play 14-year-old Miles, who is home alone because his parents are out of town for work.

Why it’s scary: The game doesn’t need monsters. A perfectly normal house, messages on your phone, noises outside the door and the question of whether you’re making the right choice. The VHS look and the almost photo-realistic environment make it feel like a real experience. It gets under your skin precisely because it’s so ordinary.

4. Unanswered
Unanswered by WhiteRoot Studio was released for free on Steam in May 2026. You wake up in a strange place, not knowing who you are or how you got there. The free base game includes Act 1 of the story, with further acts planned as DLC.

Why it’s scary: You use your flashlight to light up dark hallways and your UV flashlight to reveal invisible clues and messages. And you’re not alone: terrifying entities lurk in the shadows and hunt you down if you expose yourself too much. If you die, you end up in Limbo, a dark, flooded dimension you first have to escape. 94 percent positive Steam reviews speak for themselves.

5. We Went Back
We Went Back by Dead Thread Games was released for free on Steam in April 2020. You wake up all alone in an abandoned space station, and the exit door is locked.

Why it’s scary: The game is stuck in a time loop. With every run, the station changes a little bit, and those are exactly the details you need to watch out for. You look for clues, solve an escape room-style puzzle and realize that you’re not as alone as you thought. With a playtime of 30 to 50 minutes, it’s ideal for a quick session.

6. SCP – Containment Breach
SCP – Containment Breach is the indie classic that made the SCP universe famous among gamers. Originally developed by Joonas Rikkonen (Undertow Games), the game has also been officially available for free on Steam since February 2026, maintained by the SCP-CB Community Preservation Project. You’re a Class-D test subject in a secret SCP Foundation facility when suddenly all the entities break out.

Why it’s scary: Your worst enemy is SCP-173, a concrete statue that only moves when nobody is looking. Too bad your character has to blink regularly. Every blink can be fatal. On top of that, the map is procedurally generated, so no playthrough is the same. On Steam, it’s one of the best-rated free horror titles of all, with 97 percent positive reviews.

7. SCP: Secret Laboratory
SCP: Secret Laboratory by Northwood Studios has been on Steam since December 2017 and is completely free. The multiplayer game is based on the SCP universe: in an underground SCP Foundation facility, dangerous anomalies break out of their cells.

Why it’s scary: You play changing roles, such as scientists, Class-D inmates, guards or even the SCPs themselves. Anyone who runs into one of the creatures in dark corridors as a human quickly starts to sweat. With friends and voice chat, it also gets wonderfully chaotic. If you’d rather shiver alone, start with SCP – Containment Breach at number 6, the classic that started the hype.

8. No More Room in Hell
No More Room in Hell by the No More Room in Hell Team started out as a Half-Life 2 mod, was named Mod of the Year 2011 by PC Gamer and, fittingly, was released on Steam as a free standalone game on Halloween 2013. Inspired by George Romero’s “Of the Dead” films, you fight for survival with up to eight players while the world collapses under a plague whose victims rise again as the undead.

Why it’s scary: There’s no crosshair, barely any HUD, and ammo is extremely scarce. Often all you have is a pipe wrench against an entire horde. A single bite can infect you, and then you have to decide whether to tell your team or secretly hope for a cure. Voice chat only works over short distances, so if you get lost, you really are alone. With 88 percent positive Steam reviews, it’s one of the best free co-op horror games.

9. Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion
Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion by Lag Studios has been free on Steam since July 2015. A little ghost named Spooky invites you into her mansion, and it has 1,000 rooms.

Why it’s scary: The first rooms are still cute, with cardboard cutouts jumping into view. But the deeper you go, the darker it gets. Then creatures that all work very differently chase you through endless corridors. This mix of cuteness and genuine terror is what makes the game so special. If you want more, the store offers the paid HD Renovation, but the original version remains free.

10. Poppy Playtime (Chapter 1)
Poppy Playtime by Mob Entertainment was released in October 2021. The first chapter is free on Steam, while further chapters are available as paid DLC. You explore the abandoned toy factory of Playtime Co., whose employees all vanished one day without a trace.

Why it’s scary: The toys are alive, and they’re not friendly. First and foremost Huggy Wuggy, the big blue plush giant who hunts you through ventilation shafts. With the GrabPack, a backpack with two extendable hands, you solve puzzles and hack electrical circuits. Colorful, but vicious.
