Total War: Warhammer 40,000 sends the strategy series into the grim future of the 41st millennium. Creative Assembly combines turn-based campaigns across an entire galaxy with massive real-time battles, and SEGA is publishing the game. Here I sum up everything known about the release of Total War: Warhammer 40,000.

First things first: Total War: Warhammer 40,000 isn't out yet, and there's no exact date. This article isn't a review, but an overview of the official info. There will only be a score once I've played the finished version myself.

Outlook

I'm really looking forward to Total War in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The combination of a galactic campaign, orbital strikes and real-time battles for entire planets sounds like the biggest Total War yet.

Almost all the hard facts are still open: date, price, system requirements and age rating. But there should be plenty of gameplay looks before the 2027 release. I'll only give a score after release.

What we're looking forward to

✅ Four very different factions at launch

✅ Galactic campaign with orbital strikes

✅ Extensive customization of your own army

✅ Also on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for the first time

What's still unclear

❌ No exact release date yet

❌ Price and system requirements unknown

❌ No German voice acting

When does Total War: Warhammer 40,000 come out?

There's no exact date yet. According to a SEGA Japan press release from September 17, 2026, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is due in 2027. Steam currently only says “Coming soon.” The game was announced at The Game Awards in December 2025.

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is slated for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, making it the first time Total War comes to current-gen consoles. There's no price yet, and pre-orders aren't available on Steam yet either. I'll add the date as soon as SEGA officially announces it.

Four factions at launch

At launch, there are four playable factions that, according to Creative Assembly, play completely differently. The Space Marines are few in number but extremely powerful elite warriors in heavy armor. The Orks rely on sheer numbers, unpredictable weapons and rickety war machines.

The Aeldari are an ancient, dwindling race that strikes fast, deceptively and with psychic precision. The Astra Militarum is humanity's largest fighting force, with tanks, artillery and huge infantry regiments. To me, that sounds like four very different playstyles in both campaign and battle.

Galactic campaign and real-time battles

As usual, the game is split into two layers. On the campaign map, I expand my empire turn by turn, conquer planets, upgrade my fleets and manage my war economy. What's new is the scale: instead of a land map, there's a galactic sandbox with entire worlds.

I can capture and upgrade fortresses, bombard enemies from orbit and drop my armies onto the ground. There, I fight for the planets in real time, with infantry, tanks, walkers and colossal war machines. The trailer even shows a massive Ork Stompa.

Designing your own army

Customization is a big deal. I can play well-known subfactions and warlords from the Warhammer 40,000 universe or create a completely custom army. I'm free to choose my regiments' name, colors and symbols.

On top of that comes my faction's combat doctrine: I put together my own combinations of tactical abilities, traits and wargear. Creative Assembly wants to bring the freedom of the tabletop into the game. If you want to recreate your miniatures army, you should be able to do it here.

Languages, age rating and PC requirements

According to the Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Steam page, German text is supported. Voice acting is available in English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. Alongside single-player, there are also online multiplayer battles against other players.

There's no USK or PEGI rating yet. In Japan, the game has already been rated 18+. For PC requirements, Steam so far only lists the operating system: Windows 10 64-bit minimum and Windows 11 64-bit recommended. CPU, graphics card, RAM and storage are still unknown.
