From uni project to studio
The team came together in 2011 on a group project at Abertay University in Dundee. The name comes from an early prototype featuring a flying mechanical whale. In June 2013 the graduates, led by managing director Simon Doyle and Adam Dart, officially founded Junkfish Limited.

Monstrum and other games
Monstrum hit Early Access in January 2015 and launched in full that May. The horror game, set on an abandoned cargo ship with procedurally generated layouts and one of three monsters hunting you, was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA and a TIGA Award and sold more than 100,000 copies. The stealth game Attack of the Earthlings followed in 2018, then Monstrum 2 in 2022.

Junkfish today
These days the team works remotely from the UK and Singapore. Its next project is Wilderdark, a self-published survival horror game set on an island full of dinosaurs.
